Whether you’re a newbie skier or you consider yourself an intermediate or advanced skier, the mountain has something for everybody, including night skiing and après ski hot spots! The resort is hailed worldwide for its uniquely light, dry and fluffy “Champagne Powder™” and family-friendly atmosphere. Soak in the Hot Springs and Wash Your Worries Away

You’ll have several options for natural hot springs in Steamboat, including Strawberry Park Hot Springs and Old Town Hot Springs. Both offer uniquely rejuvenating experiences, with Old Town Hot Springs also providing a more family-friendly atmosphere for those working through the winter bucket list with kids in tow. The hot springs are open to the public every day, with membership options available for those living in Routt County who want to access the soothing waters regularly. During the winter months, 4-wheel drive with snow tires and/or chains is required to reach the Strawberry Park springs. This requirement runs until May 1st. Visitors can also contact one of the shuttle partners for safe transportation. Whichever hot springs you decide to visit, you’ll want to make sure this one is near the top of your winter bucket list!

Go Snowshoeing on Emerald Mountain

Want to escape the crowds of the ski resort? You don’t have to sacrifice time spent outdoors soaking in the beautiful mountain views. Just minutes from downtown Steamboat, Emerald Mountain boasts a network of trails that wind hikers and snowshoers through aspen groves, open meadows and along scenic overlooks. Many of the routes on the mountain are considered beginner-friendly, making this the perfect option for families and first-time snowshoers. On a clear winter day, the views have been known to stretch across town and towards the surrounding mountains. On the other hand, a quiet snowfall can transform the view completely into a serene winter escape of untouched landscape. Whether you’re taking a break from the high-adrenaline winter activities or you just want to explore nature at a more leisurely pace, snowshoeing is a great option to add to the bucket list in winter 2026.

Explore Rabbit Ears Pass on Cross-Country Skies

Rabbit Ears Pass is well known for being a winter haven for cross-country skiers in Steamboat and beyond. Outdoor explorers of all ages and skill levels have enjoyed the area for its reliable snowfall and wide-open terrain. The pass offers skiers miles of both groomed and backcountry trails, which provides opportunity across a variety of experience levels. The area is also popular for snowshoeing! Conditions at the pass often feel distinctly alpine, so expect a true mountain adventure while staying just a short drive from Steamboat. Rabbit Ears Pass is named after the distinct rock formations that resemble a rabbit’s ears, so be sure to snap a photo of the ears in the wintery white wonderland! Despite its high altitude, the pass is accessible year-round. The roads are maintained during the winter months, though visitors should always check conditions before heading out.

Experience the Beloved Steamboat Winter Carnival

During the first week of February, the Steamboat Winter Carnival is coming to town! This signature event is presented by Yampa Valley Bank and is hosted by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Full 2026 details are on the way. The Winter Carnival celebration typically features a variety of events that embrace the town’s western heritage while also highlighting modern traditions that are intertwined with the winter sports industry. This is a unique four-day event that has a little something for everybody, from kids being pulled on skis behind horses down Main Street to the Lighted Man at the Night Show Extravaganza. In 2025, there was a $15 Winter Carnival button that was required to spectate or participate in all Winter Carnival events. This button also included access to ski or ride on Howelsen Hill each day.

Put in Some Hours on the Snowmobile

Some might argue that there’s no more thrilling way to explore Steamboat than by snowmobile. This provides the perfect mode of transport to explore the town’s vast winter backcountry. There are various outfitters that offer guided tours that take riders through rolling meadows, forested trails and even high alpine terrain. These are areas that would typically be unreachable by foot or skis! Many of these snowmobiling tours cater towards beginners, which means there’s ample instruction and safety guidance for those who have never hit the snow via snowmobile. Whether you’re an adrenaline-seeker or just someone who wants to try their hand at all of the winter recreation out there in Steamboat, spending a day on the back of a snowmobile is sure to be a memorable experience!

Saddleback Ranch offers tours lasting 2-3 hours, which will take riders along a variety of trails. Afterwards, you can warm up at headquarters with a cup of hot chocolate and a freshly baked cookie! Who doesn’t love that?

Take to the Winter Trails on a Fat Bike

Media courtesy of Ride Workshop

Never heard of fat biking? Well your interest is about to be piqued! Fat biking has become an increasingly popular winter pastime in Steamboat Springs, largely thanks to the network of groomed trails that are perfect for oversized tires. Fat bike riders can explore the snow on Emerald Mountain, along the Yampa River Core Trail or at a variety of nearby trail systems that are maintained for winter use. Fat bikes offer increased stability and traction on the snow, which make for an exciting ride. Due to their size and traction, they’re even accessible for those new to winter cycling. Fat biking blends fitness with a sense of adventure and freedom, while also allowing riders to cover more ground than snowshoeing. Mix up your routine and view Steamboat from a whole new perspective!

Interested in riding? Check out Ride Workshop for fat bike rentals this winter season. Rentals are priced at $55 for a single day ride or $99 per person for a guided tour (which includes your rental bike). There are also delivery and pick up options.

Embrace Après-Ski Culture and the Local Steamboat Dining Scene

Après-ski is a french term that means “after ski.” This typically refers to the range of social activities and dining options that are enjoyed by skiers and snowboarders after a long day on the slopes. You can make après-ski into whatever you want, whether that be a cozy hot toddy at the lodge or a lively dance party with a DJ spinning tunes. Après-ski activities can kick off in the late afternoon and continue late into the evening. For many, this is a vital part of the wintertime experience in Steamboat and customs can vary from person to person. Whether you have a favorite watering hole or downtown pub or you prefer fine dining at a steakhouse to refuel after skiing on some Champagne Powder™, embrace the culture and share stories over drinks with friends both old and new. While a simple pleasure for some, après-ski belongs on any winter bucket list in Steamboat.

Grab Your Binoculars and Scan the Snow for Winter Wildlife

Winter in Steamboat Springs provides a unique opportunity to catch wildlife in their natural habitat. As the landscapes become snow adorned and the streets become quieter, it’s not a rare event to spot elk, deer and other animals. Looking for wildlife against the stark white backdrop of snow can also lend a hand to catch creatures that you might otherwise overlook. The best wildlife viewing is often in open fields and/or on the edges of town. The best times to catch wildlife in action are typically early mornings, late afternoons and early evenings. Always observe from a distance and respect the local guidelines that are in place to protect both the wildlife and their two-legged counterparts. While everyone has their favorite spot, some great places to try are Steamboat Lake, Mount Zirkel, Sarvis Creek and the Yampa River State Parks. Though who knows, you may be just as likely to spot wildlife in your very own backyard!

Look to the Skies on a Clear Winter Night

Whether you’re an avid stargazer or you can only point out the Big Dipper, stargazing during the winter can be a fun way to appreciate the darker nights and clearer air. During the winter months, stars often appear brighter and sharper, making them easier to pick out. Take advantage of these superior “seeing” conditions and make it a bucket list goal to memorize a handful of constellations so you can show off to friends and family. The further away you get from the lights of town, the better the conditions are, especially after fresh snowfall! Find a quiet trailhead, a snowy meadow or even the hot springs and look to the skies. For many, stargazing can provide a moment of stillness and wonder. Pick a night this winter, bundle up and bring a thermos of hot cocoa or your favorite herbal tea and simply slow down and look up. Despite being such a simple experience, it’s one that can hold a special significance to individuals both young and old. The best news? No reservations are required for a good time! Keep an eye on current sky conditions here.

Explore Downtown Steamboat in the Snow

There’s nothing more magical than viewing Downtown Steamboat under a dusting of fresh snow! The gentle glow of street lights reflecting off of the snow adds to the mountain town’s charm. Take a stroll along Lincoln Avenue, where you’ll find locally owned shops, galleries and boutiques that make for the perfect afternoon shopping spree. If you’re feeling too chilly, pop into one of the town’s cozy coffee shops and find a warm refuge while you refuel with a hot latte or a freshly baked pastry. Of course, there are a multitude of restaurants and breweries that would love to welcome you in for a bite or a sip, as well as live music and other seasonal events throughout the winter months. Adding a downtown stroll to your winter bucket list can serve as a reminder that the winter fun extends beyond the mountains! After all, nothing beats spending quality time in a tight knit community with friendly faces all around.
