The carnival is hosted by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, which is the largest and oldest winter sports club in the U.S. The carnival is the oldest winter carnival west of the Mississippi. Originally, the Winter Carnival was designed to help forget the hardships of winter and chase away the shorter days. Now, the carnival honors all of the fun things that winter brings! For several days, Steamboat Springs will be given over to racing, ski jumping, and even a parade that’s set to feature Steamboat’s skiing high school band (the only one in the United States)! There will also be ski jöring events down the snow-packed Lincoln Avenue, as well as a spectacular night show that features the legendary Lighted Man and an awe-inspiring fireworks display. This year’s theme is Let Your Light Shine, so come together with the surrounding community to celebrate athleticism and all things winter. There will be an array of events, activities, and more at Howelsen Hill and the surrounding areas — such as the S’More Family Fun Night and the Winter Carnival Diamond Hitch Parade.
