When visitors talk about what sets Steamboat Springs apart from other mountain towns, it is always the sense of community. There is an assumption that daily life in a place so blessed by nature, must be idyllic. To a great degree, it is. However it doesn’t make us immune from the challenges faced by the rest of the country. What we do about those challenges is what sets us apart.

Advocates Of Routt County Has Seen An Increase In Crisis Calls Since The Onset Of COVID

April is nationally accepted as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. “Sexual violence is at epidemic levels, but it’s a crisis that is hidden from view and not talked about due to stigma and shame,” said Graham Hackett, Social Change Program Manager with Advocates of Routt County. Since the onset of COVID in 2020, Advocates has seen a 71% increase in crisis calls. “Fortunately, this is a supportive community and we are collaborating to create local solutions.”

The Colorado Group Realty Charitable Foundation is proud to sponsor a host of projects with Advocates this month. The funding will support a lineup of interactive projects and skill-building programs for local schools and businesses. The newly launched workshop presentations are centered on a theme of prevention rather than cure.  The Good For Business workshop offers businesses sexual harassment training, based on creating a healthy workplace.

Colorado Mountain College Collaborates With Advocates To Pilot Two New Programs

Advocates and Colorado Mountain College have collaborated to pilot two new programs throughout this month. INTERVENE focuses on addressing bystander intervention through skills training. LGBTUniverse is addressing consent, boundaries and respect for the LGBT community through safe relationships and the pursuit of civil rights.

Advocates Continue To Spread Awareness and Offer Support Through New Iniatiatives

A volunteer based program titled Driver of Change has been launched to encourage individuals to sign up as a liaison between Advocates and their workplace, school or social community. Advocates has also partnered with the Bud Werner Memorial Library and Leadership Steamboat to educate and spread awareness of sexual assault through a variety of ongoing initiatives. Members of the community can participate and show individual support all month through the “I’m on SAAM’s Team” outreach campaign through a variety of social media platforms. “Every community needs to take a collaborative approach to make a dent in violence,” Hackett said.
